Monitor Harness
Like many before me who have built their rolling chassis, I wanted to start mine to prove I had no oil/water leaks before storing the chassis to work on the body. I also knew I would be starting it many times between now, and the final start after the body was installed.
Since I did not want to have the OEM wiring harness draped all over the place just to start the engine, I decided to build a compact, easy to connect Starter Harness. See Fig. 1 .
Starting an OEM FJ40 does not require much, electrically speaking. You need power to the ignition igniter (or coil + terminal if you are running points), power to the idle solenoid on the carb, and a way to toggle power to the starter S terminal. That's it...
I made the harness in about 2 hours from parts out of my junk box. It's easy to connect, has a lit, fused, master power switch and a momentary contact push button switch to engage the starter. Turning off the master power switch will kill the engine.
I also rigged up an oil pressure, and water temp gauge with it's own quick connect harness to monitor the first start up. See Fig. 2 .
