A while back I aquired a FJ62 3FE groove crank pulley
from an IH8MUD member for my mini-truck power steering install. When I received
it I noticed it had a groove worn on the shaft where the timing cover seal
rides. See Fig. 1. I ordered a SKF 99177 Speedi-Sleeve
to repair it. Note: This sleeve is the exact same sleeve used to repair a
parking brake drum shaft. In the meantime I gave it a coat of hammered silver
paint.
I placed the crank pulley into my meat freezer
(-15 degrees) for a couple of hours to make it easier to drive the sleeve
into position. While the pulley was chilling I read the install instructions.
I placed the now frozen crank pulley on a firm surface and
following the instructions put a thin coat of non-hardening sealant (in
my case blue silicone) on the inside of the sleeve.
Using the supplied driver tool and a small hammer I easily
drove the seal about 3/4 way down the shaft (See Fig.
2 ) then did a test fit. Turns out it needed to go down further to
center the seal in the middle of the sleeve. It ended up almost flush. (Sorry
no pic)
Once I had it correct I used a sharp chisel to start separating
the lip from the sleeve and needle nose pliers to pull it off.
Then I cleaned the silicone off the shaft, lubed up the inside
and outside of the pulley shaft with grease and used a rubber mallet to tap
it into place. See Fig. 3.
