Fig. 5
Figs. 1-4 show
the stock Aisin 71 carb on !Oy just after I had gotten the truck started
for the first time. The truck
actually
ran pretty good considering it had never been rebuilt, cleaned or even
adjusted to my knowledge! Fig. 3 shows a lot
of carbon deposits from carb fires? :-) Finally Fig.
4 shows the date code
1A28 which tranlates to a Jan 28th 1971 carb.
While tearing down the truck I was told many
times that while the carb can easily be rebuilt at home, if you wanted
it to perform it's best it should be sent off to Jim C.
(fj40jim@aol.com)
of
TLC
Performance to be rebuilt, tuned, and desmogged. He would also do the ported
vacuum mod allowing one to run a vacuum advance distributor. This involves
drilling
a new hole in the carb base above the throttle plate and inserting a tube.
See Fig. 9 below.
So in July of 2007 I boxed up the carb (and
an FJ60 distributor I aquired) and shipped it off to have the magic performed.
In October I received it back (I told Jim to
not rush as I had months of other work to do) and here is what it looks
like now:

Wow! It looks almost brand new...
